Abstract

Due to their environment, hospitals are constantly exposed to the influence of change drivers, such as demographic change or digitalisation. If hospitals do not succeed in adapting to this environment in a future viable way, this can be critical for the existence of the individual hospital and at the same time pose a threat to the entire healthcare infrastructure. In contrast to other types of change, transformability offers the possibility of adapting a hospital system to changing requirements in a targeted manner, while maintaining the hospital's ability to operate during the transformation process. Transformability is therefore crucial to ensuring a consistently functioning healthcare infrastructure. However, in contrast to factory systems, there is still no approach that hospitals can use to systematically design their transformability. In this paper, a catalogue of Transformability Potential Features for the design fields technology and space in hospital systems is developed through literature reviews and expert interviews, based on the model of factory planning and with the help of hospital objects. Transformability Potential Features enable the evaluation of a system’s transformability and can be used as a basis for developing concrete measures to increase transformability. This paper thus lays the foundation for designing hospital systems to be systematically and appropriately transformable.
