Ten years ago, a Clinical Chemistry Q&A article from February 2015 asked 6 leaders in laboratory medicine about the “changing face” of the field following several decades of consolidating analytical technologies and increasing regulatory pressures. Today, laboratory medicine continues to evolve as a result of forces such as technological advancements, economic pressures, incredible advances in molecular diagnostics, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), and future research funding uncertainty. From automation and consolidation of laboratory services to AI-driven diagnostics, these changes are bringing both challenges and opportunities to our profession. Today, laboratory professionals are navigating a complex environment where balancing service, teaching, and research is increasingly challenging. In this Q&A, the transformational forces on the current state of laboratory medicine are explored. Six invited experts share their insights on how these changes are influencing the profession and highlight strategies needed to adapt and thrive in this dynamic environment.
