We describe the "relative weights" method used to compute the effective\nPolyakov line action corresponding to a given lattice gauge theory, and present\nsome results that have been obtained so far. The main motivation is the sign\nproblem, which may be easier to address in the effective theory than in the\nunderlying gauge theory.\n
