Abstract

The different types of emissions produced by glass furnaces are discussed; typical and current emission values are quoted for the different types of melting units. The types of emissions considered include particulates and toxic components forming particulates, sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides as well as inorganic fluorine and chlorine compounds. Emission conditions for discontinuous pot furnaces are considered as well as for continuous glass tanks. The sources of the individual emissions are described briefly and the influence of some operating parameters on emissions explained. Some examples are used to show how far technological controls can go towards decreasing emissions.
