Abstract

The structural or thermal and the dynamic glass transition temperatures are distinguished by consideration of the theories of the glassy state. The latter will be especiahy considered from the point of view of the mechanical glass transition temperature. It gives indications of the elastic contribution in visco-elastic melts and becomes important to the workability of glass-forming melts at a specified rate of deformation. It can be measured by dynamic mechanical methods and may be influenced by rate of deformation and glass composition. Measurements made by different methods are reported. Special attention is given to the influences of cullet content, sulphate refining and gases introduced into the melt. Glass formation by other methods than temperature or frequency changes (such as vacuum evaporadon, sputtering, particle bombardment, gels, sudden pressure change, or soludon hydrolysis [2]) are not considered.
