EFFECT OF NUTRIENT DYNAMICS IN SOME ORGANIC MATERIALS OVER A ONE-YEAR PERIOD

Abstract

The period of optimum nutrient release from organic manure is important for proper application of manure to plant during their different growth stage. Empty fruit bunch (EFB), Poultry Manure, Cow Dung Pig Dung and Fly Ash (EFB Ash) treatments, were cured and analyzed at the laboratory for macro nutrient Nitrogen (N), Potassium (K), Phosphorus (P), Magnesium (Mg) and Calcium (Ca). The treatments were laid out in CRD with 3 replicates; Nutrient dynamics was observed within 16MOC (months of curing), from August –January, and 7-12MOC from February to July, in 2018/2019. Data were analyzed with Genstat Discovery Edition 4, while means and variance were subjected to paired t-test (n-1df) at 5% probability. Nutrient dynamics over a one year period had no significant effect on nutrient released N, P, K, Ca and Mg from Pig manure, N, P, Ca and Mg from Poultry manure, N, P, K and Mg from cow dungs, K, Ca and Mg from EFB and P, K and Mg from Fly ash within 1-6 MOC and 7-12 MOC. Significant difference (P< 0.05) was observed with Calcium content of cow dungs, where the 1-6 MOC had highest mean Ca content. Empty fruit bunch, produced significantly higher N and P within 7-12 MOC. Fly ash produced significantly higher Nitrogen and Calcium within 7-12 MOC and 1-6 MOC, respectively. Farmers should subject cow dungs to curing within 1-6 MOC for increased Ca content (peak Ca at 4th MOC was 1.28), EFB within 7-12 MOC for increased N (peak N at 9th MOC was 1.80) and within 1-6 MOC for P content (peak P at 9th MOC was 0.05), poultry dungs within 7-12 MOC for increase K content (peak K at 12th MOC was 5.17), fly ash within 7-12 MOC for N content (peak N at 9th MOC was 1.93) and within 1-6 MOC for Ca content (peak Ca at 3rd MOC was 2.62). To supply N, P, Ca and Mg (from poultry manure); N, P, K and Mg (from Cow dungs); K, Ca and Mg (from EFB); N, P, K, Ca and Mg (from Pig dungs) and P, K and Mg (from EFB Ash) application of these manure could be done at any month within one year of curing.
