This introduction seeks to deepen the historical understanding of transitory work and labour migration by exploring the complexities and nuances of temporary migration patterns and the diverse actors involved. Focusing on the Atlantic – one of the most thoroughly studied regions for large-scale mobility – as a case study, we examine the migratory trajectories of various professional groups from a global historical perspective. By engaging with three dynamic fields of scholarship – migration history, labour history, and the history of the Atlantic world – and centring professions and occupations, we challenge the traditional view of migration as a oneway, permanent relocation. Instead, we highlight the significance of the back-and-forth nature of transatlantic migration trajectories. Through this approach, we contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness between migration and labour histories, underscoring the pivotal roles of mobility and temporality in shaping migrant experiences in the Atlantic world around 1900. Mit dieser Einführung soll das historische Verständnis von temporärer Arbeit und Arbeitsmigration vertieft werden, die die Vielschichtigkeit temporärer Migrationsformen und deren beteiligten Akteuren beleuchtet. Am Beispiel des Atlantiks – einer der am gründlichsten untersuchten Regionen für Mobilität über weite Distanzen – untersuchen wir die Migrationswege verschiedener Berufsgruppen aus einer globalhistorischen Perspektive. Durch die Auseinandersetzung mit den drei dynamischen Forschungsfeldern – Migrationsgeschichte, Geschichte der Arbeit und Geschichte der atlantischen Welt – und mit einem Fokus auf Berufe und Tätigkeiten hinter- fragen wir die traditionelle Sichtweise von Migration als einseitigen, permanenten Ortswechsel. Stattdessen betonen wir die Bedeutung des repetitiven Hin- und Herwanderns in den transatlantischen Migrationsbewegungen. Mit diesem Ansatz tragen wir zu einem umfassenderen Verständnis der Verflechtung von Migrations- und Arbeitsgeschichte bei und unterstreichen die zentrale Rolle von Mobilität und Zeitlichkeit in den Erfahrungen von Migranten in der atlantischen Welt um 1900.
