Abstract

Gothic atmospheres and Mediterranean contexts mark the reception of the story of Philinnio, revenante mentioned by Phlegon of Tralle in the 2nd century AD. Reinterpreted in a diabolical key by demonologists of the modern age, the story intersects with that of the lamia and is revisited in a vampiric key in the 19th century, before appearing repeatedly in the Californian Clark Ashton Smith's weird production and finally surfacing in a creepypasta with Gothic hues.
