This article provides an overview of ways of improving fire safety in timber buildings, including effective methods and technologies to prevent and control fires. The 10th International Conference on Wood & Fire Safety was held May 12–15, 2024, in Slovakia. The focus of the conference was research advancements in the ignition and combustion of wood and wood materials. The conference featured 49 peer-reviewed scientific articles across seven thematic blocks. This report highlights three key topics: fire safety in wooden structures; fire modelling, testing and certification; and smoke control, gas ignition, toxicity and dust. These are the most relevant topics to training and education at the Rescue College at the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences. It also introduces recent research from the Rescue College, discusses future research directions and calls for contributors to the International Fire Safety Conference in 2027 to be held at EASS.
