Drawing on 20 qualitative interviews with users of AI companion platforms and general-purpose chatbots, this study examines what users seek from AI companionship and how gratifications develop through sustained interaction. Through abductive qualitative content analysis, we find that familiar Uses and Gratifications categories, including emotional release, self-expression, social presence, and identity affirmation, are generated through interpersonalized affordances: availability, memory, personalization, and responsiveness interpreted as relational qualities. The study extends the Uses and Gratifications framework by showing that AI companionship gratifications are relationally produced and recursively reorganized as users' needs and expectations change over time.
