Summer 2024 marked ten years since the LEA entered into force – a milestone in safeguarding public order and regulating the activities of law enforcement bodies in Estonia. To mark the occasion, a thematic conference was held, inspired by the updated annotated edition of the act. The authors of the commentary made a commendable contribution by offering thorough explanations and analyses that deepen the understanding of how the law is applied – a knowledge base well worth sharing. Sharing such knowledge is crucial for improving legal clarity and the understanding of complex legal concepts that play a central role in the implementation of the LEA. The conference put a spotlight on topics such as the definitions of public place and public interest, the division of responsibilities between general law enforcement agencies and those with urgent competence, and practical issues like the distinction between entering a property and conducting a search. Special attention was given to the role of technological tools, including body camera recordings, in maintaining public order. These discussions underscore the need for up-to-date and precise legal interpretations that support both practitioners and those involved in police education. The role of the LEA in Estonia’s legal system and society is undeniably significant, and its tenth anniversary is a cause for both celebration and deeper reflection. This article offers a summary of seven presentations from the conference as well as the concluding panel discussion. More detailed academic articles by Triin Roosve, Martin Hirvoja, and Andra Laurand, based on their presentations, are also included in the current issue.
