With reference to 22 narrative interviews with psychoanalysts born before 1 January 193 7, the article discusses how these interviewees present the Nazi period in their professional biographies. The important role played by the time in which they lived becomes apparent. Various central aspects of their professional training and formation (choice of profession, etc.) are investigated against the backdrop of the Nazi era. Different types of biographical treatment are identified, enhancing our understanding of the history and development of German psychoanalysis through the testimonies of people actually working in that field.
