Abstract

Facial Emotion Recognition: A large scale study in a diverse population. A consecutive finding, replicated across a variety of paradigms and studies on Facial Emotion Recognition (FER), is that humans are more accurate at identifying positive compared to negative or neutral expressions (Ruffman et al., 2008; Svärd et al., 2012). Specifically, happiness is the most accurately recognized emotion (Ebner & Johnson, 2009; Fölster et al., 2014) for all ages. With regards to other factors influencing FER - such as age, gender, actor age, actor gender, gender congruence and other types of emotional expressions- results are mixed (Thomson & Voyer, 2014; Fölster et al., 2014). The aim of the current investigation is to examine the factors influencing FER in a large and diverse (in terms of age and gender) sample. Specifically, we want to examine the accuracy of identifying facial expressions in a set of stimulus images (2 child and 6 adult faces) as a function of facial expression (happy, angry, or neutral), participant age, the age distance between participant and actor, participant gender, actor gender and the congruency between actor and participant gender. We will examine how gender and age effects -of both participants and stimuli images- might influence the correct identification of the displayed facial expression. Our experiment was hosted by the Donders CityLab at the muZIEum (museum about visual impairment) in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, and participants provided passive consent.
