Advisor: -Berhanu Bekele Sura (PhD) ABSTRACT This study was conducted to assess the implementation and challenges of communicative grammar teaching in EFL class, the case of Saja secondary school grade 10 in focus. The participants of the study were 4 English teachers and 64 students of grade ten. The qualitative and quantitative research designs were employed to conduct the research. The researcher had used the availability sampling for participant teachers and simple random sampling for participant students. Questionnaire with close and open ended items were distributed for students, semi structured interview for teachers and classroom observation with checklist were employed as instruments of data collection. The data collected through questionnaire was described using frequency and percentages while data those were collected through interview and classroom observation were written in narrative form. The data collected from all sources were triangulated to increase the reliability of the findings. Students have the problem of basic language skills, fear of making mistakes, shyness ,anxiety, lack of confidence, the lack of exposure towards English language, poor background knowledge, lack of motivation and poor language proficiency. These all problems hinder EFL teachers not to implement communicative grammar teaching properly. The results of the study also revealed that EFL teachers did not implement communicative grammar teaching by using different communicative grammar teaching activities and techniques. Therefore, EFL teachers need to implement communicative grammar teaching method in language class by providing different communicative grammar teaching activities and techniques which help to avoid the challenges that affect the implementation of communicative grammar teaching. In addition to this students need to do more for the effectiveness of communicative grammar teaching in TEFL class by participating and practicing with the activities given by their teacher.
