Abstract

In organic farming, preservation of soil fertility is essential because soil is the backbone of production systems. SolAB project (2009-2011), gathering 22 partners, focused on soil management and its impact on fertility in plant production systems. From an experimental network of 18 sites, feasibility and sustainability of different innovative modes of soil management were studied: simplified cultivation techniques (CHT) in field crops, permanent and other simplified cultivation techniques in vegetable production and alternatives to mechanical weeding under the row in orchards and vineyards. In addition, four simplified diagnostic tools were proposed to assess soil fertility in field crops, vegetable production, orchards and vineyards: spade test to assess soil structure and three bio-indicators related to populations or earthworms activity.
