Abstract

This review presents comprehensive overview of the botanical, pharmacological and metabolic characteristics of a medicinal herb of the Indian desert. A literature survey of W. coagulans published over the past 2 decades was conducted. Apart from the scientific literature published by peer-reviewed journals and various online resources such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, NCBI were also referred for collection of data on W. coagulans research. National and global portals such as the Royal Botanical Society and National Medicinal Plant Board were also used to gather information about the biodiversity of the plant. W. coagulans is a source of various novel bioactive metabolites which can be used to develop efficient therapeutics for the treatment of a range of acute and chronic disorders. However, the overexploitation of plant over decades has caused a threat to its existence, but with the advent of ex situ conservation strategies using plant tissue culture, these shortcomings in its commercialization as a global medicinal plant can adequately be overcome. Further, advances in W. coagulans research led by biotechnological breakthroughs have also been placed in perspective to highlight the research gaps, and to generate new avenues for future research which will enhance the understanding about the morphological, biochemical, and physiological functioning of the plant and will also facilitate a roadmap for formulation of novel herbal therapeutics. The knowledge generated from this review will allow both scientific as well as industrial community to dwell deep into the vast potential of the plant from ethnobotanical, pharmacological, nutraceutical and biodiversity perspectives.
