Synthesis of Barium Oxide Nanoparticles: Optical Properties and Application in Degradation Indigotine Dye

Abstract

A simple synthesis process was used to synthesize BaO nanoparticles using the coprecipitation method which saves energy and costs. The precursors used are Ba(NO3)2 and NaHCO3. The synthesized BaO nanoparticles were characterized by digital microscopy and their optical properties were observed by calculating the energy band gap using absorption spectroscopy. This research aims to synthesized simple barium oxide nanoparticles by studying their optical properties and applications as a photocatalyst in degrading indigotine dye. The results show that nanoparticles BaO with digital microscope analysis has a particle size range of 0.04-0.19 mm, with the energy band gap for each sample with variations composition of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4 is 4,290, 4,360, and 4,382 eV, and the photocatalytic activity of nanoparticles with a ratio of 1:2 shows the results that dye degradation experiment for 120 minutes achieved the highest degradation percentage 48.3%. From these results, barium oxide nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using processes and methods which is simple and its bandgap energy (Eg) has been calculated, and shows quite good function in degrading indigotine dye.
