Dans cet article, en nous appuyant sur les essais et les romans d’Umberto Eco, nous montrons en quoi la fiction narrative peut être considérée comme une « nouvelle frontière » de la recherche théorique. En effet, selon lui, si la théorie se heurte à des limites indépassables dans la connaissance de l’homme et de la réalité, le texte narratif permet au lecteur de les appréhender autrement, par le biais des expériences vécues par les personnages de ce monde possible fictionnel autre que le monde réel. Ainsi la fiction narrative remplit une fonction cognitive complémentaire qui, en rendant poreuses les barrières entre ces deux mondes et en facilitant le transfert des croyances et des connaissances de l’un à l’autre, amène le lecteur à franchir ces limites théoriques, avec des effets à la fois positifs et négatifs sur sa compréhension du texte, de lui-même et de la réalité qui l’entoure. Abstract In this paper, based on Umberto Eco's essays and novels, we show how narrative fiction can be considered as a "new frontier" of theoretical research. In fact, according to him, if the theory comes up against unsurpassable limits in the knowledge of man and of reality, the narrative text allows the reader to apprehend them differently, through the experiences lived by the characters of this possible fictional world other than the real world. Thus narrative fiction fulfills a complementary cognitive function which, by making the barriers between these two worlds porous and by facilitating the transfer of beliefs and knowledge from one to the other, leads the reader to cross these theoretical limits, with both positive and negative effects on his understanding of the text, of himself and of the reality that surrounds him.
