Propósito: Este artigo tem como objetivo estudar a prática do empreendedorismo feminino (EF) em Portugal, em particular compreender o que leva as mulheres empreendedoras a criarem o seu próprio negócio e identificar os principais obstáculos com que se deparam na criação e gestão dos seus negócios.Desenho/metodologia/abordagem: A metodologia adotada é qualitativa, realizada com base em estudos de caso a seis empreendedoras portuguesas de diferentes áreas de atividade residentes no norte do país.Resultados: Os resultados mostram que a maioria das entrevistadas empreende pela possibilidade de se tornar dona do seu próprio destino e de poder gerir livremente o tempo ao seu dispor. No entanto, a maioria das entrevistadas consideram que quando estavam empregadas era mais simples conciliar a vida familiar com a vida profissional. A questão burocrática foi a mais referida como barreira ao início da atividade. Verifica-se ainda que a maioria das empreendedoras não sente qualquer discriminação de género.Limitações da investigação: Como principais limitações apontam-se a natureza exploratória da investigação e a concentração das entrevistas no norte do País.Implicações práticas: O conhecimento sobre o EF é importante para que os poderes públicos possam conceber políticas que estimulem de uma forma eficaz a criação de novos negócios.Originalidade/valor: O EF é uma área com enorme potencial em termos de criação de valor. No entanto, os estudos empíricos existentes sobre as motivações e obstáculos para a prática do EF são ainda escassos. Palavras-Chave: empreendedorismo; género; mulher; Portugal [ENG]Title: "Women Entrepreneurship in Portugal: Motivations and obstacles"AbstractPurpose: This article aims to study the practice of female entrepreneurship (PE) in Portugal, in particular to understand what leads women entrepreneurs to start their own business and to identify the main obstacles they face in setting up and running their businesses.Design/methodology/approach: The methodology adopted is qualitative, based on case studies of six Portuguese entrepreneurs from different areas of activity residing in the north of the country.Results: The results show that most of the interviewees undertake the possibility of becoming their own destiny and being able to freely manage the time at their disposal. However, most of the interviewees consider that when they were employed it was simpler to reconcile family life with professional life. The bureaucratic issue was the most referred to as a barrier to the beginning of activity. It is also found that most female entrepreneurs do not experience any gender discrimination.Limitations: The main limitations are the exploratory nature of research and the concentration of interviews in the north of the country.Implications: Knowledge about PE is important for public authorities to design policies that effectively stimulate new business creation.Originality/value: EF is an area with huge potential for value creation. However, existing empirical studies on motivations and obstacles to the practice of PE are still scarce.
