Christian Zionism refers to the belief that the creation of the Israeli state in 1948 was the fulfillment of prophecy. The concept of creating a Jewish state in Jerusalem predates 1896 when Herzl wrote his famous essay. This article discusses the historical and Biblical and political foundations of this way of thinking. It describes how the idea functions in the American political system, how it is misunderstood and even distorted by some critics, and how it functions in public opinion.
