Α representative selection of optical glasses was fine pohshed, and a pragmatical cleansing procedure was applied to demonstrate the chemical interaction between glass and cleansing agents (detergents). Commercial available detergents were used which are offered for glass and which are used also for optical glasses in the German optical industry. Most of the detergents contain phosphates which are known to attack glass. The pentasodium-triphosphate has the severest effect on some types of glass. The phosphate-free AC-detergent has been proved to cause the shghtest attack. The effects were determined qualitatively and quantitative (weight loss). For many types of glass the already established chemical test methods provide appropriate information on the behaviour in detergent solutions but for special types a special detergent test, under development internationally, is required.
