Abstract

If we accept that phonetic/phonological systems can remain adaptable throughout life, and can be reorganized in response to the contrasts of a new language by the addition of new categories or the modification of existing ones, then there is an undeniable interest in studying the speech of non-native speakers in order to better understand these phenomena of (re)organization of the phonetic/phonological space in question. Computer processing of the sound signal enables us to examine these phenomena with precision, thereby limiting the subjectivity of an assessment based on listening and perception. In this case, an association between the [Ø] and [oe] of French and the [ɛ] vowel of the ‘reduced’ vowel system of Polish occurs most often and requires appropriate training to acquire the proper labiality. The French [oe] is regularly tinged with the acoustic characteristics of Polish [ɛ] or [ɔ]; [Ø] is associated with the vowels [ɛ] or [u] ; and [y] is given the resonance of [i], or even [u]. Be that as it may, as the degree of aperture increases (muscle relaxation takes effect), labialization becomes more difficult to control.
