This study presents a preliminary implementation on developing historical literacy in a year 5 elementary classroom. The aim of the study is to explore the applicability and the effectiveness of history decoding strategies as they were developed within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics in California History-Social Science Project actions. The results of the study show that pupils’ engagement with activities that focus on the ways language constructs historical meaning can contribute to improving all pupils’ reading and writing skills in regard to history texts and can effectively prepare them for the transition to secondary education.
