Magical Realism as a Manifestation of Tergui Cultural Voice in Al-Koni’s Work, Anibus a Desert Novel

Abstract

Abstract: The article aims at approaching Al-Koni’s work Anubis A Desert Novel (originally published in 2002) from a magical realist perspective to voice the Tergui community along with its rich culture. Magical realism in this paper does not only categorize the work as third-world text but it celebrates the Tergui heritage through the introduction of the reader to the nomadic realm. Therefore, Al-Koni does not only write back to the west but he succeeds in introducing the Tergui cultural heritage along with its myth to the reader. The narrative has a double nature that revolves around resistance and cultural celebration. Despite the fact that the resistance is implicit, the author through absence is highlighting the aspect of difference from the western world. Symbols, visions and dreams and polarities, along with metamorphoses reflect the universality of the Tergui community. This paper is meant to invite the reader to re-construct history and discern a new version of truth.  Keywords: Desert Novel, Cultural voicing, Magical Realism, Metamorphoses, Tuareg.
