Abstract

Antinutrients are bioactive ingredients in plant materials that hinder or reduce the absorption of nutrients if consumed in excess, but become useful to the body if an appropriate dose is taken. Field experiments were conducted from 2015 through 2017 at the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, Southeastern Research Station, Okwuta, Umuahia South Local Government Area, Abia State, to assess the effect of integrated nutrient management on some antinutrients of tannia (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) in Umudike. At the end of 2017, one crop was uprooted from each replicated plot treated with 600 kg of NPK fertilizer + 10 tonnes of poultry manure and another from the control. The experiment was set up as a 2 x 3 factorial arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications with factor A consisting of two levels - integrated nutrient management (600 kg of NPK fertilizer + 10 poultry manure tonnes per hectare) and control, whereas factor B was made up of three plant fractions, namely: corm, petiole and leaf. The results indicated that integrated nutrient management significantly (p≤0.05) reduced percentage concentrations of alkaloids and flavonoids in tannia by 0.60 and 0.90 %, respectively, over the control. On the other hand, integrated nutrient management significantly (p≤0.05) improved the % concentration of oxalates by 1.41 % relative to the control, whereas phytates, saponins and tannins were significantly reduced by the application of integrated nutrient management at varying percentages.
