This study was conducted in public primary schools in Sinana Woreda,Bale Zone Oromia Region . The objective of the study was to investigate the determinants of female students’ dropout rate of second cycle public Primary schools of Sinana woreda. In conducting the research, concurrent research design, pragmatism paradigm and mixed methods were employed. The study was carried on 345 students, 28 teachers, 6 principals.1 supervisor and 8 members of parent-teacher association. Respondents were selected through simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. As research instruments questionnaires, personal in-depth interview, and document analysis were employed for the collection of data. The collected data from the field were coded and entered into the computer for analysis by using SPSS version 20 for windows. For the analysis of data both descriptive and inferential statistics were applied. The results of the analyzed data were presented by using frequency, percentage and mean. The data from documentary analysis indicated that the rate of dropout in primary schools of the study area is high and its trends also showed increasing tendency. The data also showed that the dropout problem was more serious among girls of grade eight. The analyses to identify the causes of the problem showed that the high rate of students’ dropout in the study area was the result of in-school and out-school related factors. Therefore, it was concluded that the dropout problems in the study area were the results of economic, social, and cultural, some in-school and out of school problems. Depending on the result of the findings building satellite schools and collaborative work among principals, teacher, supervisor and members of parent teacher association on reducing female students dropout should be given due attention .Additionally, the woreda education office and the zonal education bureau should make rigorous follow up, give support and take timely measures were some of the recommendation . 6
