Abstract

The mechanism of formation of the phototropic silver chloride phase in commercial glasses has been investigated in a water soluble sodium borate melt. Electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and nephelometric techniques have been used to make a detailed study of the kinetics of phase formation. The variation of silver chloride solubility in the melt with temperature has been determined and it is shown that the formation of photo-active AgCl can be treated by classic nucleation theory as a binodal liquid-liquid phase separation and as a special case of Ostwald ripening.
