Results obtained as part of the CASDAR OïdUV project showed that when used as a preventive measure, UV-C light flashes applied at intervals of 7 to 15 days reduce powdery mildew symptoms on grapevine (open field), tomatoes and rose plants (greenhouse). Observations on rose plants also showed a boost to marketable yield under production conditions. A transcriptomics study revealed that flashes of UV-C light stimulate expression of genes of the salicylic acid/NPR1 protein pathway, as well as genes involved in systemic acquired resistance, notably in the synthesis of N-hydroxy-pipecolic acid. Prospects for the application of flashes of UV-C light on new crops and against new pathogens, as well as against abiotic stresses, are discussed.
