Allelopathic cover crops for ecological weed management are of great interest for farmers. Little is known about the impact of allelopathy in the field. However, our results suggest that allelopathy is a factor that should be considered. Contrary to general opinion, the development of a large aboveground biomass, which creates strong shading, is not always the main factor responsible for weed suppression. In fact, amaranth growth suppression by buckwheat, forage radish and brown mustard is the same under high and low shading conditions, suggesting that root exudates play an important role. Our experimental approach combines field trials and a metabolomic approach.
