Outside of the Netherlands, historical research and controversies on Dutch overseas and colonial history have received only scant attention of historians. This goes in particular for works written in Dutch. The effect is deplorable. European colonial history is largely written without serious engagement with one of its most important actors. This article aims to provide, first, an overview on some of the public history debates relevant to the colonial past in the Netherlands. It then, secondly, introduces works of synthesis and historicizes some key developments in the literature. Finally and thirdly, the article discusses recent research on the role and importance of violence in the Dutch trading and colonial empire. Außerhalb der Niederlande finden historische Forschungen und Kontroversen zur Geschichte des niederländischen Handels- und Kolonialreiches wenig Beachtung. Das gilt insbesondere für die niederländischsprachige Literatur. Dies ist bedauerlich, denn europäische Kolonialgeschichte wird im Wesentlichen ohne Berücksichtigung eines ihrer wichtigsten Akteure geschrieben. Dieser Aufsatz stellt zunächst einige wesentliche öffentliche Debatten zur Geschichtspolitik in den Niederlanden vor. Zweitens bespricht er einige Synthesen und rückt diese in eine historische Perspektive. Schließlich, und drittens, diskutiert er neuere Forschungen zur Rolle und Bedeutung von Gewalt im niederländischen Handels- und Kolonialreich.
