Does the organic sector need specific regulations? This article, based on recent research, provides two arguments to answer this question. The first is that these industries are subject to specific constraints in terms of informational material. We show that buyers of organic farming products experience two types of uncertainty (prescription uncertainty and content uncertainty) and that the EU’s Organic Agriculture label, as it has been developed over the last thirty years, can answer these uncertainties. The second is that these sectors are often motivated by a desire for organizational innovation that is related to the alternative projects engaged in by the related participants. We conclude that labeling has significant limitations in this regard, especially in that it can generate price competition, and show that the actors in this sector develop innovative regulations to protect themselves from its effects.
