The National Space Day (GNS), established by the Italian Government to commemorate the launch of the first Italian satellite, San Marco 1, in 1964, offers a significant moment to reflect on the importance of space research and its interconnections with Earth science. In this context, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) celebrated the 2023 edition of the GNS by organising public events in Rome, Bologna and Catania, focusing on observations of the Earth from space and their importance for understanding geophysical, volcanological and environmental phenomena. These initiatives aimed to improve communication to the public on the importance of scientific activities related to space in which INGV staff are engaged, highlighting the driving role of innovation and the transversality of space research across the three INGV departments: Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Environment. The GNS therefore becomes not only an opportunity to celebrate Italian space achievements, but also to promote greater public awareness on the importance of satellite monitoring and scientific research for society and the environment.
