The research is devoted to the role of intangible cultural heritage in shaping the identity of urban communities and its impact on creating a unique atmosphere of urban spaces. The authors focus on such elements of the «living heritage» as rituals, traditional knowledge, and art, emphasizing their importance for preserving the historical environment and cultural value of cities. The paper analyzes the mechanisms provided for by the UNESCO Convention of 2003, aimed at protecting the intangible heritage, ensuring its viability and integration into sustainable development strategies. Special attention is paid to the relationship between the preservation of heritage, strengthening local identity and socio-economic benefits, including attracting tourists and investments. The article analyzes practical approaches to the protection of intangible cultural heritage in relation to the material values of the urban environment based on the materials of research conducted on the historical settlement of Samara.
