The article provides an overview of how traditional school-based prison officer education was transformed into a flexible and modern programme that meets the needs of employers and the expectations of employees. This learning primarily takes place on the job and combines school-based and online learning. The article describes the process of creating the initial curriculum within the context of the new learning model and analyses it from the perspectives of the educational institution, employer and learner. The learning model described can help leaders in the field of applied education to modernise the learning processes to meet the demands of the contemporary work environment.
