This paper discusses the most recent state of knowledge of commercial alkali silicates (five solid types, sodium metasilicate, various amorphous hydrated silicates (Portile®) and orthosilicate hydrate or metasilicate hydrate, water glass solutions). The structure of the silicate speeles in commercial silicates is of particular current interest because of the relations between the technical suitability of the products and the structure and distribution of the silicates present in them. The results obtained by modified trimethylsilylation reaction with a TMS carrier system and 29Si NMR spectroscopy show that commercial soluble silicates contain high proportions of two through four fold bonds.
