MODERN CONTRACEPTIVE USE AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONG STREET ADOLESCENTS IN NEKEMTE TOWN

Abstract

Major Advisor: Dessalegn Wirtu (PhD) ABSTRACT Background: Street adolescents have risky sexual practices that increase the likelihood of adverse sexual and reproductive health consequences, without accessing of sexual reproductive health care. Globally, the research knowledge gap exists in the sexual behavior and contraceptive use of street adolescents. The intensity of the problem is high in settings like Ethiopia, where there are little is known about their sexual behavior and modern contraceptive use. Objective: This study is aimed to assess modern contraceptive use and associated factors to modern contraceptive use among street adolescent in Nekemte town, August 2019. Methods: Community based cross sectional study design with mixed approach was used to carry out in Nekemte town. Quantitative data was collected through interviews from 219 street adolescents. For qualitative study, sixteen street adolescent and eight sexual reproductive health service provider were selected and interviewed. The data collection methods included in-depth interviews with street adolescents and key informant interviews with service providers. Time location sampling was used for quantitative which is recommended for enrolling research participants in special situations like street adolescents. Descriptive statistic was summarized the finding, and logistic regression were performed to assess the association between independent and dependent variables used by SPSS version 24.0. Qualitative data was analyzed by content analysis approach. The obtained data note was translated to English and the main concepts and themes in the response were identified. Results: From sexually active street adolescent, 64% were known at least one method of contraceptive, 80% were knew at least one place where to obtained contraceptive service. The main sources of information about contraceptive of adolescent were peers (38%), parents (14%) and mass media (7%). However, 41% of adolescent were not have source of information. Despite their high knowledge, 56% of participant was used modern contraceptives at least one time in the last 12 month. Condom was the most widely used of contraceptive (52%) followed by injectable (13%) and pill (11%). The main reason for non-user was lack of adequate knowledge (51%), unplanned sex (56%), inconvenient place of contraceptive service (58%), and infrequent sex (35%). Street adolescent who were age15-19 years (AOR=2.5; 95% CI: 1-6), born out of Nekemte (AOR=3.8; 95% CI: 1.3-7.0), not currently involved in income generating activity (AOR=3.6; 95% CI: 1-12), know method of contraceptive (AOR=3; 95% CI: 1.0-8.0), and know health facility (AOR=4.8; 95% CI: 1.5-15) were more likely to uses modern contraceptive while not having a source of information (AOR=0.31; 95% CI: 0.14-0.67) was less likely to use modern contraceptives. Conclusion:This study results showed that most of the street adolescent were knew at least one method of contraceptive and more than half of participants were used a method of contraceptive. Moreover age, residence, involvement in income generating activity, knew contraceptive method, knew health facility and source of information of street adolescent were significantly associated to uses of modern contraceptive. Recommendation: Accessing information, mobile peer-based service and friendly services in facilities could be focused, and rigorous qualitative and quantitative studies should be conducted to identify the root causes.
