The accuracy of 10 CaO stabilized and 6 Y2O3 stabilized zirconia oxygen probes before and after use in the waste gases of glass tanks was investigated. Under laboratory conditions both kinds of probe showed good agreement between predicted and measured values in calibration gases between 800 and 1000 °C. During lives of at most 6 months most of the probes failed by fracture of the ceramic. The accuracy of some soundly constructed and still functioning probes remained as good despite larger losses of active electrode surface. The condition of the electrodes was characterized by measuring their current-potential curves.
