Developing decision support tools to equip with automated heat detection sensors and use the data from the sensors already installed in dairy farms, these were the objectives of this project, managed by the Institut de l'Elevage. In a context of development of precision livestock farming, it has helped to develop technical and economic tools to guide the choice of the farmers to invest in heat detection sensors or not for their herd. In addition, data continuously produced by Medria HeatLive ® sensors, installed in more than 1043 farms, were combined with data from the National Bovine Genetic Information System. The treatment of this database made it possible to access new indicators of heat expression (amplitude of high activity associated with heat, duration of high activity, area under the curve of high activity). These indicators are influenced by the breed, parity and production level of cows. They could eventually be used for genetic selection on heat expression.
