The consideration of biodiversity and its roles in the functioning and sustainability of agroecosystems is a paradigm shift. What progress has been made in understanding these roles and in setting up agricultural systems based on biodiversity? Methodological advances in molecular biology and artificial intelligence have made it possible to reveal hidden biodiversity, particularly of soils, and to reconstitute networks of biotic interactions. Functional ecology concepts renew the understanding of how agroecosystem plant communities work and the choice and selection of service plants or genotypes to be grown in a mixture. With the rise of the concept of ecosystem services, which helps to finalize the roles of biodiversity, work is emerging, which is still too rare, linking biodiversity, functions and services, sometimes on a large scale (EFESE-EA study). Principles for managing planned biodiversity at multiple spatial and temporal scales for the provision of multiple services have been clarified and tested in innovative system models or experiments.
