Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with growing evidence suggesting a link between oral health, particularly periodontal disease, and cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia. While consensus on causality remains debated due to shared risk factors, studies suggest that chronic periodontitis may contribute to CVD through systemic inflammation, bacterial dissemination, and altered immune responses. Additionally, periodontal therapy, particularly non-surgical interventions, has been associated with reductions in systemic inflammatory markers, potentially lowering cardiovascular risk. This article explores the latest evidence on the relationship between periodontal disease and CVD, highlighting key biological mechanisms, epidemiological evidence, clinical implications, and the role of periodontal treatment in cardiovascular disease prevention.
