Through a case study on durum wheat, the authors explored the temporal evolution of the ideotype concept and how the present diversification of environments may influence diversification of ideotypes and lead to the need of a dynamic and participatory plant breeding. This renewed way to conceive and manage breeding lead to rethink the ideotype notion that is closely linked to ex-ante breeding trait. We suggest the term of realtype that integrated the confrontation to reality and context. A collective design representing the diversity of actors and skills is the key to a better building of the realtype.
