The pig production in the French West Indies is ensured by both types of farms: specialized industrial systems based on imported feed and breeds and alternative systems which are deeply dependent on biodiversity available in their environment. The latest systems are mainly characterized by the presence of several productions (vegetable and livestock) and they are carriers of innovation in valorization of local resources. The results from INRA and its partners on the use of local resources in pig production may contribute to the development of pig production in Martinique and Guadeloupe. Based on our knowledge of existing systems, nutritional value of energy sources (banana, sugar cane, tubers and roots) and nitrogen sources (leaves of root or tuber, legumes), and characterization of local pig breed, the Creole pig, we proposed some examples of pig production systems based on the utilization of local resources.
