Inertial navigation systems require precise angular alignment with the flight vehicle, particularly when vibration isolators are utilized. This paper describes an isolator arrangement that provides a soft suspension along all axes in translation (18 cps) and a rigid suspension about all axes in rotation (above 30 cps). Angular returnability is better than 30 sec of arc. Both friction and viscous dampers can be utilized to limit the resonance amplification to values of 5 or less. A description of how mechanical-impedance tests are used to evaluate the performance of viscous dampers as a function of frequency, is also described. Vibration transmissibility curves are given for a typical isolation system.
