Abstract

Confinement (e.g., during a pandemic, military operation, or imprisonment) presents a unique challenge for maintaining physical performance. Specifically, confinement limits the amount of habitual physical activity, as well as the space and equipment available for purposeful exercise. These restrictions might influence the dose of exercise needed (frequency, volume, intensity) – and modalities of exercise available (e.g., running, lifting weights) – to maintain physical performance when compared to scenarios in which people can otherwise move about freely and access fitness equipment and facilities. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review is to: 1) estimate an effective dose of exercise for maintaining physical performance during confinement; and 2) provide insight into practical solutions for maintaining endurance and strength when the space and equipment available for exercise is limited.
