We develop a controlled high-temperature expansion for nonequilibrium steady\nstates of the driven lattice gas. We represent the steady state as\nP(\η)\∝ e-H(\η)-\Ψ(\η), and evaluate the lowest order\ncontribution to the nonequilibrium effective interaction \Ψ(\η). We see\nthat, in dimensions d\≥2, all models with nonsingular transition rates have\nthe same \Ψ(\η), which consists of a three-body effective interaction\ndecaying like 1/r2d+1. The models with the Metropolis rule show\nexceptional behavior.\n
