Abstract

The role of digital in short food supply chains remains little studied while this one contributes certainly to their renewal. In this paper, we first go back to the recent history of these chains to show the place of digital in the different models of development around them. By crossing our observations, exchanges within the RMT Alimentation locale and a concrete experience in the domain, we then explore a diversity of digital uses, based on a scale of technological maturity. This typology, unpublished, allows us to point out some of the advantages, limits and challenges of these uses, in the perspective of food systems’ sustainability especially. We thus open the discussion around a major challenge from this point of view, that is the role which can play digital in the development of food democracy, favouring the transition of these systems. To conclude, we propose several lines of pluridisciplinary and participatory research, which the collaboration researchers-actors behind this paper has already helped to advance.
