Abstract

Drought is a multiform constraint expressing at different plant organisation levels via adaptive responses determined by the genotype. The development of modelling tools including genotypic response to water stress is essential to design the genotypes most adapted to drought. Which ecophysiological and genetic knowledge are needed to develop such tools for sunflower crop? After presenting key biological processes of plant water status control and molecular determinants of drought tolerance, this article presents a short review of the most important results of the literature to illustrate this research within the framework of the French program « Tournesol 2010 ».
