This paper reviews 40 years of INRA activities on grain legumes for feed aiming at the development of growing areas of these crops and targeting environmental friendly impacts. Innovations are organised according to two scales of impacts: (1) those relative to the grain legume crop itself (improving use of resources of symbiotic origin, breeding winter-grown varieties with lower irrigation requirement, reducing fungicide requirements, contributing to biodiversity, reducing polluting losses in animal husbandry) or (2) those relative to the global cropping system with the insertion of a grain legume crop in rotation, intercropping or catch crop strategies, in order to reduce N leaching, fongicides-herbicides-insecticidesnitrogen inputs, damages of Aphanomyces euteiches on pea roots. As an illustration, three examples of actions : the maintenance and use of genetic resources, the definition and management of a winter pea plant ideotype, the development of modelling tools allowing the ex ante assessment of environmental, economic and social impacts of growing grain legumes. Perspectives and new directions for research are finally discussed.
