The aim of this article is a poetological analysis of PokaZ (Show) directed by Justyna Wielgus and referring to the practices of freak show. The author discusses the compositional procedures that intercept the oppressive form of the show and subversively ‘cripple’ it. In doing so, she reflects on the cultural images of disability (victim, hero, eternal child and medical specimen) and the discourses on it (the discourse of pity and the medical discourse) activated in the performance, and she does so from the perspective of critical disability studies. It enables deliberation on words and associations at play, i.e. ways of talking about and looking at disability that shape artistic communication.
