Abstract

As any other Italian public research institution, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) carries out the so‐called “Third Mission” activities, devoted to education, with the aim of delivering to the public the scientific and technological knowledge obtained while doing research. In this aspect, INGV promotes a close connection between research and society, in addition to its strategic government role aimed at the comprehension and mitigation of natural phenomena. Among the activities comprising the “Third Mission” are the Paths for the Transversal Competences and Orientation (PCTO) aimed at high school students. The PCTOs represent a teaching methodology side‐by‐side with the education and learning carried out in classrooms at school, with the objectives of making the school closer to the world–attending work, transferring knowledge, and creating training experiences. In attending the PCTOs experience, the high school students have the possibility to acquire relational and behavioural skills (soft skills), together with professional and technical abilities (hard skills). In addition, another aim of the PCTOs is to promote students’ future scholastic and professional orientation, for a better definition of their life plan.
